5 Tips To Get Rid Of Tension Headaches Naturally

If you've ever had a headache, you know how it can dampen your day. A headache is when you feel pain in your head and face. Headaches can be of different types, some common ones include:

  • Tension Headaches

  • Migraines

  • Sinus headaches

Today we are going to be addressing the most common of them all - TENSION HEADACHES

Tension headaches often feel like a dull, achy pain and tightness across your forehead which may sometimes radiate towards neck and shoulders. They occur sporadically and may last for sometime. There are multiple things that can trigger a tension headache, some common ones include:

  • Food triggers like skipping meals, eating foods that you might be sensitive to, etc.

  • Environmental stressors such as staring at the screen for too long, loud noises, over exposure to sun, etc.

  • Hormones - yes, hormones!

  • Poor posture

  • Dehydration

  • Lack of sleep

  • Emotional stress

Many people turn to over-the-counter pain killers to get rid of their headache, but did you know that taking pain-killers frequently may have some side-effects in the long run? Why take medications when you can easily treat these at home using some simple hacks. So, today I'm sharing with you 5 tips to get rid of tension headache naturally at home.

  1. GENTLY STRETCH YOUR NECK AND SHOULDERS:

Your neck and shoulders support your head. Things like bad posture, staring at the screen without taking a break can lead to tension headaches. Relieve the tension in your head, neck and shoulders by gently stretching them out. This will relax your neck and shoulder muscles and will help relieve some stress which may help reduce your headache. Watch the video on how to do it

2. HYDRATE:

The human body relies on water to perform its most critical functions, so having too little of it can be very dangerous. When it’s severe, dehydration may cause brain damage and death. Headache due to de-hydration might be an indication that your body just needs more water.

Drink a glass or two of water right when you notice a headache coming on!

3. STEP OUTSIDE FOR A SHORT WALK:

There is nothing that Nature can't fix. Research shows that stepping outside for a short walk and breathing in some fresh air can work wonders on your stress levels and may help relieve tension headaches.

4. DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS:

There are a number of studies that show specific essential oils may be beneficial for headaches. Diffusing these essential oils help relax the body and mind and may help relieve tension headaches.

Some of my favorite essential oils to help relieve tension headaches are: Lavender Oil, Peppermint Oil, Rosemary oil.

How to use?

Fill your diffuser with water, add 4-5 drops of your favorite essential oil and diffuse. I sometimes use a combination of these oils. It is such an amazing stress-buster!

5. BREATHE

If there is one 'free' remedy that cures pretty much everything, it's BREATH. Our breath has this amazing power, it's just sad that most of us forget to use it.

How to do?

Sit down in a quiet place and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in and exhale. Do this for 1-2 minutes every now and then until the headache melts away.
