Healthy 'Pandemic Pantry'

Hi Everyone,


I just wanted to pop in here to talk about the Covid-19 outbreak that has been making big news lately.


Most of us are working from home, schools and businesses worldwide have been shutdown in order to slow down the rate at which this pandemic is spreading.


This is an unprecedented time - a time for us to be kind, open-hearted, and focused on what we can do to protect ourselves.


One of the things we can do to take care of ourselves and our loved ones is to make use of the self- isolation as an opportunity to learn making some healthy meals that not only taste delicious but can also help strengthen our immunity.


I've put together a list of healthy pantry essentials that you can stock up on, in case the shut down is going to last longer than a few weeks.


PERISHABLES


FRESH FRUITS:


  • Apples

  • Oranges

  • Pears

  • Bananas - once ripe, you can peel and freeze them

  • Grapes

  • Berries


VEGETABLES:


  • Onions

  • Potatoes

  • Beets

  • Carrots

  • Celery

  • Bell peppers

  • Cabbage

  • Avocados

  • Turnips

  • Chayote Squash

  • Butternut Squash

  • Sweet Potatoe


HERBS & SPICES


  • Ginger

  • Garlic

  • Green chilis

  • Cilantro

  • Basil

  • Mint

  • Parsley

  • Spices like turmeric, red chili powder, garam masala, curry powder and other spices that you would normally use for everyday cooking.


DAIRY & EGGS


  • Milk

  • Plant-based milk like Almond milk, Cashew milk, Oat milk

  • Yogurt/ curd

  • Butter

  • Ghee/ clarified butter

  • Cheese

  • Eggs

FROZEN FOODS


  • Fish

  • Meat

  • Coconut, grated

  • Some frozen vegetables

  • Some frozen fruits like berries, mangoes etc.

  • Bread

  • Baby food puree

  • Pet food


NON-PERISHABLES:


GRAINS:


  • Rice

  • Quinoa

  • Oats

  • Millets

  • Pasta

  • Tapioca


BEANS & LENTILS


  • Chickpeas

  • Mung beans

  • Kidney beans

  • Lentils like Toor dal, channa dal, moong dal etc.


NUTS & SEEDS


  • Almonds

  • Cashews

  • Walnuts

  • Chia seeds

  • Hemp seeds

  • Pumpkin seeds


FLOUR:


  • Whole wheat flour

  • Rice flour

  • Almond flour

  • Gluten-free flour

  • Pancake mix

  • Coconut flour/ Desiccated coconut


CANNED FOOD:


  • Tomatoes

  • Pasta sauce

  • Canned beans

  • Coconut
