Know Your Ingredients - PEPPERMINT

Hi guys! Hope all is well. It's been so hot here in California this week. We've been making a lot of refreshing drinks like infused water, watermelon margaritas and fresh mint iced teas to cool off lately.

I have a small veggie patch in my garden where I grow some vegetables and herbs like Mint, Oregano, Rosemary etc.

Mint is one of my favorite herbs to use. It is so versatile and can easily be incorporated into every day cooking. But did you know that Mint also has some amazing health benefits and that it has been used for centuries now for its medicinal properties?

Here are some of the health benefits of Mint:

Mint can:

  • Help manage gastro intestinal problems. It’s anti-spasmodic properties helps relieve spasms in your gut. It may help relieve some of the symptoms of IBS, indigestion and help relax the digestive system.

  • It works really well for kids when they complain about tummy aches. A cup or two of peppermint tea can work wonders for little kids.

  • Help relieve menstrual cramps.

  • Possibly relieve tension headaches. Menthol is an active ingredient in peppermint that can help reduce headaches. Drinking a warm cup of peppermint tea or applying a dab of peppermint essential oil to your temples can help relieve tension headaches.

Mint can be incorporated into everyday cooking in many ways. It has been used by cuisines all over the world to add freshness to dishes . Here are 5 easy ways you can incorporate Mint into your everyday cooking:

1. MAKE YOUR OWN MINT TEA TO AID DIGESTION

Tear 8-10 fresh mint leaves and place them in a mug. Gently muddle them with a spoon and pour hot water ( not boiling) over the leaves and allow it to steep for 5-6 minutes. You can remove the leaves or leave them in and eat them after you finish sipping your tea.

You can also add few leaves of fresh mint to your Chai Tea

2. MAKE FRESH MINT RAITA OR YOGURT DIP

Just combine yogurt, fresh mint, cumin powder, salt and pepper and whisk well until well-combined. You can add chopped cucumber for a refreshing spin.

3. MAKE REFRESHING WATERMELON ELIXIR

4. COOL OFF WITH SOME INFUSED WATER

Beyond all this, growing your own herbs is the most cost-effective ways to eat well and add a wonderful touch to your culinary experiments. Plant this wonder herb in a container in your garden or leave the plant on your kitchen window sill to add a touch of beauty to your kitchen.
